Notes
Atitlán, located in the volcanic highlands of southern Guatemala, is one of the country’s most picturesque and distinctive coffee regions. Coffee cultivation began here in the late 19th century, when the crop was introduced to take advantage of the region’s rich volcanic soil, high altitudes, and ideal climate. Surrounding the stunning Lake Atitlán and nestled between three volcanoes—Tolimán, Atitlán, and San Pedro—the region offers fertile soil and a unique microclimate influenced by the lake’s humidity and the cool mountain air. These conditions create perfect growing environments for high-quality Arabica coffee, often cultivated at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 1,800 meters. Atitlán is home to many Indigenous communities, where coffee is often grown on small plots using traditional, manual practices passed down through generations. Processing is typically done using the washed method, further enhancing the clarity and brightness of the cup. Coffees from this region are known for their full body, vibrant acidity, and distinct citrus and floral notes. Today, Atitlán remains a symbol of artisanal coffee production, where natural beauty, cultural heritage, and exceptional quality come together in every cup.
