The Cup of Excellence stands as the pinnacle of achievement for coffee producers. Farmers separate micro-lots of their most carefully-processed coffee and send them off to go through a gauntlet of sensory analysis. Simply making it into the competition, as Fazenda Ponte did, is an achievement in and of itself, and the winners are rewarded with a guarantee of extremely high prices for years to come.
Unfortunately, much like Kendrick Lamar losing out to Macklemore for a GRAMMY win in 2014, Fazenda Ponte fell just short of placing for the subjective award. Despite the metal, no one today would argue which one of those albums is more influential, timeless and, frankly, better. Macklemore sought and won public appeal. Lamar, however, innovated.
Rodolfo Moreno Costa Rodrigues is an innovator. He began incorporating his Agronomic Engineering experience into his parents’ farm in 2015 and continues soaking in knowledge from events and trading ideas with other nearby farmers. Fazenda Ponte hasn’t stopped evolving, always improving post-harvest processing, drying, and storage solutions.
While it may have fallen a percentile of a point short of a prestigious ribbon, this lot is deserving of abnormal appreciation and we feel lucky it fell to us. We taste notes of honeycrisp apples and pears, with a full-bodied maple sweetness in a delicate and beautiful cup. Trust us, this is MAAD good coffee.
