Rancabali is a sub-district in Bandung Regency, West Java, located about 28 km from the regional capital, Soreang. The area has a cool climate because it is surrounded by mountains, stretches of tea plantations, and community coffee farming land. Rancabali is a conservation center for animals, namely deer and Javan Gibbon. 47 small farmers in the region deliver their cherry to a wet mill in Tenjolaya Ciwidey. The coffee is promptly de-pulped and undergoes a classic washed process. The facilities at the mill enable this processing method, as it is possible to control the drying with greater consistency, a difficult feat for smaller operations due to the humid conditions.
Coffee has old roots in Java, stemming from the early 1700s when Yemeni coffee seedlings arrived in Indonesia via trade with India. The Dutch East India Company propelled both coffee production and trade between Java and Europe, cementing Java’s legendary status as the first origin to widely cultivate coffee outside of Ethiopia and Arabia.
